Immunization Services

Travel Immunization Clinic
You need more than a passport and suitcase if you plan to travel abroad. You need to be immunized against illnesses common to your destination!

Moses Taylor's Travel Immunization Clinic located in our Outpatient Department, helps travelers protect themselves against illness, and helps ensure that their trip will go as planned. All involved agree that immunization on a timely schedule is very important when planning to leave the country for business or pleasure.

Moses Taylor's clinic offers vaccines for the following: Typhoid, cholera, meningitis, hepatitis A prophylaxis, pneumonia, polio, diphtheria/tetanus, haemophilus influenzae B, measles, mumps, rubella and yellow fever. Oral prescriptions are available for malaria prophylaxis as well. When a traveler contacts the Travel Immunization Clinic, he or she will be asked for specific information on where that person will go, and the order in which he or she will visit those locations.

After the traveler provides this information, the staff checks your destination(s) to see which vaccines are required. Immunization vaccines should begin four to six weeks before departure. Ideally, shots should be given at least two weeks apart. The recommended time frame allows you sufficient time to receive the shot(s) and gives your body time to react and produce immunity.

Dr. Stephen Pancoast, clinic medical director, stresses the important points to remember for getting your immunizations:

"You need to see a physician early in your trip planning, since it takes approximately four weeks to develop antibodies for most vaccines. Without that time frame, your body may not have adequate time to prepare. All countries have different requirements travelers must meet to be admitted into the country and to depart for their next destination. Failure to meet those vaccination requirements may mean you may be denied entry into the country of your destination or you will not be allowed to visit a particular area. Therefore, it is important for the traveler to provide specific and accurate destination points and the order in which they will be reached."

Following the vaccinations, the traveler will be given an International Certificate of Vaccination, as approved by the World Health Organization. The clinic staff includes the stamp of approval necessary to prove that person has met international health requirements. They advise travelers to carry this certificate in a safe place at all times to ensure their entry and exit into other countries.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To receive additional information or schedule an appointment, call the Moses Taylor Travel Immunization Clinic in the Outpatient Department 570-340-2930 or e-mail us at travel@mth.org.
