The goal of the Diabetes Education Program of Moses Taylor Hospital is to help people with diabetes positively manage their health while improving their quality of life. To do this, the staff teaches a group of special skills called "self management". Self management means taking charge of your diabetes and controlling it as much as possible.

The Diabetes Education Program is committed to providing education/training to patients, families, and Healthcare professionals about living well with diabetes. In the form of individual and group classes, the staff provides the resources to help patients and their families manage diabetes successfully.

Our staff are certified diabetes educators; a registered nurse and a registered dietitian; helping patients to learn new self-care skills in the areas of diet, exercise, medication administration, blood sugar monitoring, stress management, and prevention of diabetes complications. Family members are encouraged to participate.

The Diabetes Education Program takes place during daytime and evening hours. Patients choose the time which best fits their schedule. The program addresses:

What is diabetes?
Individualized meal planning
Carbohydrate counting
Precautions with exercise
Medication
Home blood sugar monitoring
Coping with diabetes
Diabetes complications
Foot care

Special topics that can be addressed are pre-pregnancy counseling, gestational diabetes, and individual instruction on insulin administration. The Diabetes Continuing Education Program is offering monthly afternoon sessions on a variety of topics. Join us in sharing information and providing support for others dealing with diabetes. Call (570) 340-2140 for more information.

A physician's referral is required for registration in the program. The costs of the program are covered by most insurance plans. This program is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the American Diabetes Association.
